Collection Visit: AMA | Art Museum of the Americas, Organization of American States

AMA | Art Museum of the Americas is the oldest museum of modern and contemporary Latin American and Caribbean art in the United States. The collection includes 2000 objects in varying media such as painting, sculpture, installations, prints, drawings and photographs, providing an overview of stylistic and iconographic trends beginning in the early 20th-century. Much of the importance of this art collection is in its specialization on works that proved instrumental in the launching, particularly in the United States, of the careers of many who are now regarded as masters of mid-century Latin American and Caribbean art. The collection also represents artistic trends that have developed in Latin America, including new figuration, geometric and lyrical abstraction, conceptual art, optical and kinetic art.

Collection Visit: The Textile Museum, Indigenous American Textiles Collection

The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum celebrates the creative achievements of local and global cultures from antiquity through today. The Textile Museum is home to 21,000 examples of handmade textile art representing five continents and five millennia, with textiles created by South, Central and North American Indigenous groups making up nearly half of the collection. During this private tour, curator Shelley Burian will take guests through the Animals exhibition, a global selection of textiles decorated with animal imagery, as well as saddle covers and trappings designed to adorn camels, elephants and horses, focusing particular attention on the pre-Hispanic textiles within the exhibition. Then, the group will join academic director Karthika Audinet at the Cotsen Center for a show & tell of some of the more notable pieces among the center's 4,000 textile fragments. The tour will end in the Textiles 101 Room where guests can explore how textiles are made.

Collection Visit: Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum

The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) is the nation’s first collection of American art and craft and an unparalleled record of the American experience throughout three centuries. Located steps from the White House, the Renwick Gallery’s collection of contemporary craft is considered the finest in the United States, housing major works by well-established craft masters as well as objects by up-and-coming artists including jewelry, studio furniture and decorative arts. SAAM’s leading Latinx art collection reflects the rich contributions of Latinos to the United States, presenting a picture of an evolving national culture that challenges expectations of what is meant by “American” and “Latino.” Themes since the mid-twentieth century, when the concept of a collective Latino identity began to emerge, tackle civil rights, identity, and reexamining community and bicultural experiences.

This event is part of the inaugural LAD l Latin American Design Week. In collaboration with museums, cultural institutions, international embassies and private collectors, LAD will present an ambitious curatorial program of collection visits, design talks, designer receptions, a book launch, an opening party & design awards and a 2-day Latin American Design Show. Held at DC's coolest new venue AutoShop, the LAD Show will feature handmade, limited-edition art, fashion, furniture, jewelry, lighting, tabletop, textiles and large conceptual works available for sale by 35 designers and innovators shaping new futures for Latin American design.
